A boxalele — by me

Here are a few pictures of my hand-made (with my own blistered and bleeding hands) Boxalele. I was going to make a cigarbox uke, but the only cigarboxes I can get easily are pretend wood (cheap veneer), and after carving the neck (black heart sassafras), I couldn’t put it with a rather ordinary cheap cigarbox — so I made my own ordinary, blood stained box.

I hope to put strings on it tomorrow, and if it stays together, I’ll link to a youtube video of it to give a sound sample. If it falls apart, I’ll let you know that too.

  1. Very cool. Intersting pattern on the wood. FYI, Cohiba boxes are solid cedar. They aren’t very easy to find, but they’re solid wood.

    • Thanks for dropping by, and for the tip!

  2. The back of the box has great looking wood. Is that the black heart sassafras too? You’d be surprised how good some of the original cigar boxes sound. If you want a great fingerpicking style cigarbox, put spruce on as the soundboard. I’ll be interested to hear your boxalele sounds.

    • Yes, the back is sassafras, the sides are Huon Pine, and the top is Myrtle — I’ve posted a slide show with Boxalele played as background.
