Vanuatu — small eight-stringed instrument

A friend just arrived home from Vanuatu, and showed me a picture of a local band called the Tangoa String Band.

Does anyone one know what the instrument is called?

  1. Hard to tell from that angle, but I’d guess it’s a Tahitian ukulele.

  2. It’s just a Polynesian (or Tahitian) ukulele. 8 strings made of nylon fish line – two double middle strings tuned up an octave higher

  3. Check out this blogspot. Pretty neat insturment:

    • Watched some of the videos — amazing talent and impressive instrument.
